Balule Private Game Reserve is a large wildlife reserve in Limpopo Province, part of the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem. It covers around 40,000 hectares and shares open borders with Kruger, which means animals roam freely between the reserves.
Amenities are limited inside the reserve, so guests should plan ahead for banks, ATMs, fuel, and shopping, which are mostly available in nearby Hoedspruit, although lodges provide restaurants, picnic sites, and small curio shops.
It’s known for its authentic safari experiences and abundant wildlife, including the Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos—along with giraffe, zebra, hyena, and various antelope.
Visitors to Balule can do morning and evening game drives, guided bush walks, bird watching, and cultural visits to nearby Shangaan villages. Scenic excursions to places like the Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon are also possible.
Wildlife encounters aren’t limited to large animals; you may come across monkeys, baboons, bushbuck, bats, insects, snakes, spiders, and scorpions, so caution is advised.
The reserve maintains its ecosystems carefully, including savannah, riverine forests, and bushveld, while focusing on conservation and protecting endangered species.
Safety is important—always stay in vehicles during drives unless guided, secure valuables, and take malaria precautions. Open fires are prohibited except in designated areas, and there are rules for speed limits, check-in and check-out times, and late arrivals.
Malaria is present in the area, so preventative measures are necessary.
The main entrance gate to Balule Private Game Reserve is the Olifants West Gate, located off the R40 Road approximately 17 kilometers from Hoedspruit towards Phalaborwa.
The reserve is about 450 km from Johannesburg, roughly a five to six-hour drive, or a short transfer from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. The main entrance is through Olifants West Gate, and there are several lodges within the reserve, including Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge, Imagine Africa Luxury Tented Camp, and Tomo Safari Lodge, all offering different levels of accommodation and safari experiences.
