Timbavati Game Reserve is a private nature reserve located in Limpopo Province, right next to Kruger National Park. It covers about 53,392 hectares and has been around since 1956.
Amenities are limited inside the reserve, so it’s best to bring cash and fuel before entering, although some lodges have restaurants, gift shops, and small conference facilities.
Once you’re in, there’s a lot to do. Game drives, walking safaris, bird watching, night drives, and even horseback safaris are all available with guides.
The reserve is famous for its rare white lions and offers excellent opportunities to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. The reserve has over 360 bird species and a wide range of mammals, reptiles, and insects, including snakes, scorpions, baboons, bushbuck, and even cheetah and wild dog.
Safety is important, so follow your guide, keep a distance from animals, and avoid fires—smoking during drives is banned. The area is malaria-risk, especially in summer, so take precautions. Check-in is usually from 2 pm and check-out by 11 am, and if you expect to arrive late, inform your lodge in advance. The reserve is ecologically diverse, with savannahs, riverine forests, and wetlands, and is committed to conservation, so guests are expected to respect the environment.
It’s about a 6.5-hour drive from Johannesburg, or you can fly to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport and take a short transfer.
The main entrance is Enkhulu Gate, where there’s a small conservation levy, and the reserve has 18 all-inclusive lodges and four self-catering camps, ranging from luxury tented lodges to more traditional bush lodges.
