Lion Sands Game Reserve is a private safari destination located in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa, right next to the Kruger National Park.
The lodges provide on-site restaurants, curio shops, and picnic areas, but there are no ATMs or fuel stations inside, so it’s best to prepare before arrival.
Guests can do morning and evening game drives, bush walks, bird watching, river walks, hippo tours, and even hot air balloon safaris.
You’re likely to see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and various antelope, along with monkeys, baboons, bushbuck, bats, spiders, scorpions, and insects.
The reserve is famous for its Big Five sightings, especially leopards, and it offers a mix of luxury lodges and treehouses along the Sabie River. There are four main lodges—Ivory Lodge, River Lodge, Tinga Lodge, and Narina Lodge—and a few treehouses for a more unique stay.
Safety is important: always follow ranger instructions, don’t feed wildlife, secure your belongings, and use insect repellent. Fires are controlled and managed by the reserve for conservation, and malaria is low risk but precautions are advised.
Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00, with late arrivals needing prior notice. Overall, Lion Sands offers a mix of high-end comfort and authentic safari experiences while prioritising conservation and wildlife safety.
It’s about 442 km from Johannesburg, which is roughly a six-hour drive, or you can fly to Skukuza Airport and transfer by road for around 45 minutes.
Access is through Gowrie Gate, and once inside, all travel around the reserve is guided.
