Ngala Private Game Reserve is a large, 14,700-hectare safari destination located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, right next to the Kruger National Park.

There are two main accommodation options: Ngala Safari Lodge, which has 20 thatched cottages and modern facilities like a pool, spa, and family programs, and Ngala Tented Camp, which is smaller with six luxury tents for a more immersive experience.

Fuel stations are outside the reserve, and dining is available at the lodges, with picnic sites and curio shops also on site.

Activities at Ngala centre mostly around game drives, guided nature walks, and bush dining experiences, with options for helicopter flights for aerial views.

The reserve is well known for its Big Five sightings and rare white lions, making it a big draw for anyone wanting a serious wildlife experience.

Wildlife is abundant, so you can expect to see elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and plenty of antelope, along with over 300 bird species. There are snakes, insects, bats, and occasional scorpions, so caution is necessary, and it’s best to stick with guides during walks or drives.

Fires are only allowed in designated areas, and while malaria isn’t common, taking preventive measures is still advised. Check-in is generally from 14:00 and check-out by 11:00, with late arrivals needing to notify the lodge. The reserve operates under strict rules to protect wildlife, including keeping noise down, no drones, no firearms, and following guides at all times.

It’s about 640 km from Johannesburg, which is roughly a 6–7 hour drive via the N12 and N4, or around 3–3.5 hours from Nelspruit.

Entry is via the Timbavati Control Gate, where you sign in and pay the necessary levies, and it’s worth noting that ATMs and shops are limited, so you need to come prepared.
