Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is a large, unfenced reserve in Limpopo Province, right next to Kruger National Park and the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. It covers about 60,000 hectares and is part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, which means wildlife can roam freely between reserves.
Lodges like Simbavati, Klaserie Drift, and Kateka Safari & Wellness offer different accommodation options, from luxury tented camps to boutique lodges, and some provide wellness activities, yoga, and spa services.
The reserve focuses on conservation, so you’ll see efforts like rhino protection and eco-friendly practices while exploring the wildlife and natural environment.
Inside the reserve, there are basic amenities, but banks and ATMs are limited, so it’s best to bring cash. Fuel stations, shopping, and restaurants are mostly in Hoedspruit.
Activities include guided morning and evening game drives, walking safaris with armed rangers, and bird watching with over 300 species in the area.
The reserve is known for offering a real safari experience with the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—and a wide range of other wildlife, including giraffe, zebra, hyena, wild dog, various antelope species, snakes, scorpions, monkeys, baboons, and bushbuck.
Safety rules are strict: always stay with a guide, don’t feed or approach animals, secure your food, and avoid off-road driving. Fires are only allowed in designated areas, and malaria precautions are recommended, even though the area is low risk. Check-in is usually from 2 pm and check-out by 11 am, with late arrivals arranged with your lodge.
It’s about a six-hour drive from Johannesburg, or you can fly into Hoedspruit and drive for around 30 to 60 minutes. The main access is through the APNR control gate, and all guests need to check in and pay the entrance fees before entering.
