Phalaborwa is a town in Limpopo Province, South Africa, often called the "Town of Two Summers." It sits on the western edge of Kruger National Park and is the only town in South Africa that borders the park directly. The town has a long history of mining, dating back to the Sotho tribes around 400 AD, and today it is home to the Foskor open-pit mine, one of the widest man-made holes in Africa.

Phalaborwa is known for its high temperatures, especially in winter, and acts as a gateway to the northern section of Kruger National Park through the Phalaborwa Gate.

Visitors can stay in various lodges and resorts, including Sefapane Lodges, Nyati Safari Lodge, Hans Merensky Golf Estate, and ATKV Eiland Spa, which also offer amenities like banks, ATMs, restaurants, fuel stations, picnic sites, conference venues, and shopping options.

There is a lot to do in and around Phalaborwa. The main attraction is Kruger National Park, where you can go on guided or self-drive safaris to see the Big Five, as well as monkeys, baboons, bushbuck, snakes, scorpions, bats, and other insects. Other points of interest include the Foskor Mine Museum, Letaba Elephant Hall, and the nearby Blyde River Canyon.

Safety is important: don’t feed or provoke wildlife, keep valuables secure, avoid driving at night, and use ATMs in safe, well-lit areas. Phalaborwa is in a malaria zone, so take precautions like mosquito nets, repellent, and antimalarial medication if recommended. Fires are a risk in the dry season, so follow local regulations. Standard check-in times at lodges are usually 2 PM, with check-out by 10 AM, and late arrivals should always be arranged in advance.

It is about 497 km from Johannesburg by road, which takes roughly six hours, and around 400 km by air.
